End of the Alliance

The Alliance for Progress met with public success was short-lived and a real economic impact but limited. But in the early 1970s, the program was widely perceived as a failure.
The three main reasons put forward were that:
  • the Latin American countries were not willing to launch the necessary reforms, particularly land reform;
  • American presidents succeeding Kennedy endured the program in a less strong;
  • the amount of capital invested was enough for a whole hemisphere, $ 20 billion accounted for only 10 dollars per capita.
In 1973, the Organization of American States dissolved the Standing Committee set up to implement the program.
